Rev Run (born Joseph Lloyd Simmons) is a founding member of the seminal hip-hop group Run D.M.C and one of the most influential rappers and personalities of his generation. Along with Jam Master Jay and Daryl “D.M.C” McDaniels, he influenced rap music more than any other group and is heavily responsible for where the genre stands today. Run D.M.C has been named as the greatest rap group of all time by several media outlets and music critics. Rev Run has also achieved great success as a solo artist, Christian minister and T.V personality, starring with his family in the hit show “Run’s House.”

Reverend Run pushed rap music to heights never before seen as a member of Run D.M.C during the 1980’s and 90’s. The group innovated the new style of “hard core” rap that would define the genre more than 20 years after its advent, influencing the East Coast rap scene in ways still felt today. Run D.M.C’s self-titled debut album would be the first ever rap album to achieve gold status when it dropped in 1984, earning them the first Grammy award nomination for a rap group in the process the following year. Their success would only increase, as the follow up album, “King of Rock,” became the first rap album to go platinum.

The group’s third album, “Raising Hell,” became the first to earn multi-platinum status. Produced by Rick Rubin, the album included one of the most popular songs of all time in the Aerosmith cover “Walk This Way.” That track is largely credited as transcending hip-hop culture, bringing rap music to white culture and demonstrating that the genre had the potential for a much broader appeal. The hit single “My Adidas” also proved to be ground breaking, leading to an unprecedented million-dollar endorsement deal with the sneaker company. In just three years, the group had pushed rap out from the underground and into the forefront of popular culture and commercial success. They single handedly proved to record labels and major companies that rap music was both commercially and culturally viable.

Beyond Run D.M.C, Rev Run has seen further fame and success in his own right. He starred in the show “Run’s House” on MTV for six seasons. The show followed his daily life of him and his family, and its enormous popularity has since paved the way for an entire genre of reality shows about the families of the rich and famous. An ordained minister, he has been recognized and commended as a religious and spiritual force as well. The success runs apparently runs in the family as well. His brother, Russell Simmons, is the co-founder of Def Jam Records and is considered one of the three richest men in hip hop with a net worth of more than $300 million and his son, Diggy Simmons, is an accomplished rapper as well.
