Diplo is known for his unique capabilities as a DJ, producer, songwriter and label-head. After gaining national attention and acclaim as one half of the Philadelphia DJ duo Hollertronix along with DJ Low Budget, Diplo rapidly climbed the ranks after teaming up with musician M.I.A. He produced her critically successful “Piracy Funds Terrorism” mixtape before working with her on the global smash hit “Paper Planes,” nominated for a Grammy for record of the year. While working with major acts such as Missy Elliot, Lil’ Jon, Santigold, Radiohead, Britney Spears, Ray Charles and Beck, Diplo has also established himself as one of the most influential DJs in the EDM world. Born in Mississippi, Diplo (born Thomas Wesley Pentz) grew up in Miami where he became engaged in the local bass music scene as a kid. His DJ career really took off when he was going to college in Philadelphia, where he started the DJ duo Hollertronix and became an influential concert promoter and performer. As his sound caught on across the country and world, Diplo linked up with M.I.A and began collaborating with her to produce much of her work starting in 2004. This led to multiple critically well-received works including the iconic track “Paper Planes.” His success and Grammy nomination for the track attracted collaborations with bigger artists looking for that distinctive Diplo sound, leading him to work with major acts like Snoop Dogg, Bruno Mars and Shakira. He also founded his own Mad Decent record label, now a major player in the electronic music game, which has signed such acts as Dillon Francis, Baauer, Flosstradamus, Riff Raff, DJ Snake, Trippy Turtle, Yellow Claw and Zed’s Dead. The label’s annual “block party” concert series has sold out major cities nationwide the past few years and is a staple of the festival season each summer.
