Louis C.K (born Louis Szekely) is widely considered to be the reigning king of the standup comedy universe. In addition to his three-decade standup career, he also oversees virtually all aspects of his self-titled hit television series Louie, and has written hundreds of episodes of comedy television in his esteemed career. C.K has also recently played dramatic roles in critically acclaimed films. He moved to Boston at the age of seven and would spend the rest of his childhood growing up there. Louis started performing standup in 1984, and after some initial struggles he managed to achieve some fame as a part of Boston’s burgeoning comedy scene. He would move to NYC to further his career, achieving national success in 1996 with a thirty minute feature on HBO. Meanwhile, C.K worked as a writer, penning almost 300 episodes of Late Night with Conan O’Brien as well as episodes for David Letterman and Dana Carvey’s shows, respectively. He would go on to write for The Chris Rock Show and Saturday Night Live, to name a few. In 2006, Louis created a show for HBO called Lucky Louie, starring himself. Although it was canceled after a season, it was the forbearer for his groundbreaking series, Louie, on FX. Before Louie, though, C.K recorded his first three full-hour standup specials, Shameless (2007), and Chewed Up (2008), and Hilarious (2009).
Following Hilarious, Louis C.K really started changing the game. First, his self-titled show on FX changed the way that television shows could be made. C.K was given unprecedented control, directing, editing, writing, and starring in a show about himself, in which he interspersed standup segments with topics related to his own life. The dark, honest nature of the show as well as his almost complete freedom of creativity makes him a true pioneer of comedy television. Furthermore, his distribution method of his most recent two standup specials has completely changed the way comics do business. In light of increases in illegal downloads, Louis C.K avoided the traditional route of distribution through heavyweights like HBO or Showtime, and instead released the content himself directly through his website for a small fee. The strategy paid off, netting him millions of dollars in sales and influencing a number of other comics to adopt the same model. But aside from pushing the boundaries of how comedy is produced, distributed, and ultimately consumed, what truly sets Louis C.K apart is that he is one of the funniest men alive. His commentary on the happenings of everyday life has endeared him to an enormous and diverse worldwide audience of people who relate to his poignant, honest observations.
