The Afghan Whigs Talent Bio:
The Afghan Whigs is a rock band originating from Cincinnati, Ohio. They originally began in 1986 and ended in 2001. They have reformed in 2011 with original members Greg Dulli who is the lead vocals and play the guitar, Rick McCollum who is the lead guitar, and John Curley who plays the bass. They emerged from the grunge movement, beginning as a garage band. In 1988 they released their first album independently in 1988. In 1993 they released their debut major label album Gentlemen.
The band evolved from Dulli’s previous band, The Black Republicans. Curley later joined and introduced Dulli to McCollum. They bonded over their love for R&B. The Black Republicans broke up and Dulli relocated to Arizona. He created half the material of what was soon to be used on The Afgan Whigs’ debut album called Big Top Halloween. The banned later formed and the first song they ever rehearsed was a cover of the Temptations “Psychedelic”. Only 1000 copies of Big Top Halloween were pressed and it was released under the band’s own label Ultrasuede. It caught the attention of Jonathan Poneman. He is the co-founder of the Seattle based indie label Sub Pop. They signed Afghan Whigs in 1989. They originally only wanted to sign the band to release one single, but it turned into a full record contract.
When they signed with Sub Pop, they became the 2nd non-Northwestern U.S. band to be under Sub Pop’s label. The band released their second album Up In It. It was recorded by Jack Endino who was Nirvana’s producer. In order to support the album, they went on tour with grunge originators Mudhoney and Boston underground band Bullet LaVolta. They released their limited edition single called “Ornament” which featured the vocals of Scrawl singer Marcy Mays.
In 1992 they released their album Congregation and a covers EP called Uptown Avondale. The EP featured covers of hit soul groups such as The Supremes. Their videos for “Conjure Me” and “Turn on the Water” from their album Congregation, reached MTV and they were labeled as a new band to watch. The band later signed to Elektra Records in 1993 and they released their album called Gentleman. It reached No. 17 on The Village Voice’s “Pazz & Jop” critic’s poll for the year of 1993 and it was the bands most successful commercial release.
In 2001 the band broke up due to family obligations and it made it very hard for them to produce new material together. In 2006 the band reunited temporarily and recorded singles “I’m a Soldier” and “Magazine”. In 2011 they officially reunited.
