Take That Talent Bio:

Take That is an English Pop group who formed in 1990. The group currently is made up of members, Gary Barlow, Howard Donald, and Mark Owen. The original members also featured Jason Orange and Robbie Williams. Being Manchester based, producer, Nigel Martin-Smith wanted to create a British male vocal group modelled after New Kids on the Block. Martin-Smith was introduced to young singer-songwriter Gary Barlow , who had been performing at clubs since the age of 15. Impressed with Barlow’s self-written material, he decided to build his new boy band around Barlow’s musical abilities. An audition phase to building the band soon followed Martin-Smith and Barlows meeting. Howard Donald was chosen as one of the oldest to audition at 22. Mark Owen was selected at age 18, leaving his bank employee life far behind him and at age 16 Robbie Williams was chosen to round out the group. Take That’s first TV appearance was on The Hit Man and Her in 1990, where they performed Barlow’s self-written unreleased song, “My Kind of Girl”. Take That initially worked the same territory as their American counterparts, singing watered-down new jack and R&B, urban soul and mainstream pop. However they worked their way toward high energy dance music. As they aimed to break into the mainstream music industry, they played at small clubs, schools and events across the country trying to self-build a fanbase as they travelled to gigs constantly for months. Take That’s breakthrough single was a cover of the 1975 Taveres hit “It Only Takes a Minute”, which peaked at number seven on the UK Singles Chart. The success lead them to release “I Found Heaven” and “A Million Love Songs”, which also peaked at number sevens. They covered a Barry Manilow hit, ‘Could it be Magic” which became one of their biggest hits to date. By 1993-1994 multiple released songs charted in at number one in the UK. By1994 Take That had become radio and television stars across Europe and Asia, but it was not until 1995 that they gained recognition on their first World Tour. The ball started rolling soon after, with fronting major magazine covers, becoming mass merchandised, developing a large female teenage fan base, and performing multiple award shows.
