Steely Dan Talent Bio:
Steely Dan approached music making from a different conceptual perspective than your average rock band. This American jazz/rock band was founded by members Walter Becker and Donald Fagen in 1972. The bands popularity grew in the 70s with their distinct sound, mixing elements of jazz, rock, funk, R&B and pop. Preferring the studio to the road, the two hired a group of musicians to record alongside them for a grand studio sound. Walter (bass) and Fagen (vocals/keyboard) recruited guitarists Denny Dias and Skunk Baxter, keyboardist/singer David Palmer and drummer Jim Hodder. Officially forming Steely Dan in 1972.Steely Dan’s debut album ‘Can’t Buy A Thrill’, released in 1972, held two popular hit singles, “Do It Again” and “Reeling in the Years”. The groups success continued to elevate throughout the decades with critically acclaimed singles that became staples for radio stations around the world. After a few group member adjustments they recorded their second album, ‘The Royal Scam’ and it sold well for the group in 1976. The album ‘Aja’ released in 1977, that included favorites like “Peg” and “Deacon Blues” went to top 5 within three weeks of its release, and became the first platinum album for the band. ‘Aja’ also won the band its first Grammy for Best Engineered Album.
In 1982 ‘Gaucho’ released scoring them yet another Grammy for Best Engineered Album. In the 90s the band regrouped after a long hiatus and performed in a few concerts. 2000 sparked the year Steely Dan released one of the most anticipated albums in over two decades, ‘Two Against Nature’. The album debuted at #6 and won the band 3 Grammy’s, one being Album of the Year. Steely Dan has sold over 40 million records and was also inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2001.
