Alt-J Talent Bio:
Alt-J is an indie rock band originating from Leeds, England in 2007. The band consists of Gwil Sainsbury who plays the guitar and bass, Joe Newman who is the lead vocalist/guitarist, Gus Unger-Hamilton who plays the keyboard/vocals, and Tom Green who plays the drums. In 2012 they released their debut album called An Awesome Wave in Europe and the United States. The band on the 2012 British Mercury Prize. In 2014 Gwil Sainsbury left the band and was replaced by Cameron Knight.The original group met at Leed’s University in 2007. They began recording in their halls room on GarageBand and Sainsbury was acting as the producer. They were originally named after a British TV presenter, Daljit Dhaliwal. When they graduated, they moved to Cambridge and they claimed Jobseeker’s Allowance. They went two years of just rehearsing and landed a deal with Infectious Records in 2011. Their self-titled EP featured four tracks, and was recorded with producer Charlie Andrew. The EP included tracks “Breezeblocks”, “Hand-Made”, “Matilda”, and “Tessellate”.
The band’s symbol is the delta sign that scientifically represents “difference’ or “change”. In 2012 Alt-J supported Wild Beasts and started a small concert tour in the United Kingdom and Ireland. They have also played in several summer festivals including Latitude, Tramlines, Bestival, Reading and Leeds, End of the Road, Green Man, Lowlands, In the Woods, and Into the Great Wide Open. They also performed on the main stage of the Clockenflap Multimedia Arts and Music Festival in Hong Kong.
In January of 2014 Gwil Sainsbury left the band. The band continued on and still remained best friends with Gwil. They later went on a 23 day tour in North America, starting in Vancouver and ending in Washington. In September of 2014 they released their second album This Is All Yours. It hit No. 1 on the UK’s Official Albums Chart.
