Alabama Shakes Talent Bio:
This female-fronted American rock band was formed in Athens, Alabama in 2009. Brittany Howard (lead vocalist/guitarist) formed the band in high school saying that she asked a few guys in school that wore cool no name band tee shirts. The new core members of the band consisted of Brittany Howard, Zac Cockrell, and Steve Johnson. The band created this blend of blues, rock, and southern soul that brought them into a Decatur studio to finally record some songs they were working on. One of the demos found its way over to Heath Fogg, whom of which had “one of the best bands in high school”, according to Brittany. They later played with Fogg’s band for their very first show, following the show Heath became a new member of the group. The band had some fun playing covers by James Brown, AC/DC, Otis Redding and Led Zepellin, but they also focused on their own material for the band. They decided that to separate themselves from other bands called The Shakes, they would add Alabama to the their name.After a few failed attempts to record their music at home in 2011, they stumbled into a Nashville studio that allowed them to record their first few singles, “You Ain’t Alone” and “I Found You”. The single “You Ain’t Alone” was featured in a jewelry commercial ad and made it to MTVs list of bands to watch. Alabama Shakes gradually rose to recognition and was eventually signed by Rough Trade Records in the United Kingdom and ATO Records in the United States.
The band recorded their first full-length album in September of 2011, titled “Boys and Girls”. The album sold over 500,000 records on March 13, 2013 of the release, awarding them a Gold record status. Alabama Shake fans patiently await the groups’ second album set to release early 2015.
